Somaliland
In 2023, TaRL Africa together with UNICEF Somaliland Country Office, and in partnership with the Somaliland Ministry of Education and Science, planned to pilot the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach in selected schools. The pilot aimed to improve the foundational literacy and numeracy skills of children in Somaliland.

TaRL Delivery Model
The TaRL pilot was implemented in four districts (Hargeisa, Borama, Berbera, and Gabiley) in 65 government schools. The intervention was from February 2023 to May 2024 and targeted learners in grade 3. The language of instruction was Somali. TaRL Africa and Africa Education Trust (AET) offered technical assistance during training and school implementation, respectively, during the pilot period. The program has had a significant impact on children in Somaliland and has to date expanded to 12 districts in 4 regional states, providing training of up to 600 teachers and fostering strong community collaboration and acceptance.
